Uncut Gems is finally available on Netflix U.S.

Take an adrenaline rush, multiply it by two, and then multiply it again by 10. The result is Uncut Gems. Thanks to a stellar performance from Adam SandlerUncut Gems became one of the surprise hits of 2019. The crime thriller about jewelry, gambling, and New York City’s Diamond District can now be streamed on Netflix in the U.S.

If I were to describe Uncut Gems in one sentence, I would say it’s about a gambling addict whose bad decisions spiral out of control, leading him to risk it all with one, final bet. Directed by the Safdie Brothers, Sandler plays Howard Ratner, a Jewish jeweler and degenerate gambler in the Diamond District. For Howard, the thrill gambling provides him outweighs the monetary repercussions. Howard owes over $100,00 to his loan shark brother-in-law, Arno (Eric Bogosian), and must find a way to repay the debt while trying to repair his relationship with his wife, Dinah (Idina Menzel).

Howard believes the answer to his prayers rest with a black and green Ethiopian opal. Howard plans to sell the opal for a high six-figure price. Things get complicated when NBA star Kevin Garnett, playing himself, comes into Howard’s shop and falls in love with the opal. Garnett obsesses over the gem and asks Howard to lend it to him for the night as a good luck charm before an NBA Playoff game. Reluctantly, Howard hands over the opal and keeps Garnett’s championship ring as collateral.

Frankly, that’s when the proverbial stuff hits the fan. Thanks to a gambling addiction and innate ability to stir up trouble, Howard becomes a loose cannon and gets into serious trouble with the kind of people who don’t accept apologies. It’s a race against time as Howard must retrieve the gem from Garnett, sell it, and pay back his debt before it’s too late.

Uncut Gems became an instant hit upon its release, becoming A24’s highest-grossing film domestically. For his performance, Sandler received won Best Actor from the National Board of Review, New York Film Critics Circle, and Independent Spirit Awards.
