Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba has thrown his weight behind a proposal by FIFA president Gianni Infantino to transition Africa Cup of Nations from the current two-year cycle to be held after four years.
The former Chelsea man has said holding the tournament after every four years will give it “special favour.”
” This can be a good thing because it would give this trophy a very special flavour due to its rarity, ” he told AFP.
Drogba, who was recently appointed an advisor to the CAF president Ahmad, believes that for African football to grow they will need to adopt the model by other continents. He added that this tournament should be used as a development platform for countries that don’t have an opportunity to showcase their talents/
Wading into the debate on the availability of Europe-based stars, Drogba said that African stars are a disadvantaged lot when the tournament is held in January.
” African players playing in Europe are getting injured in the middle of the season. At the time, when we played AFCON in January, we always risked our places in the clubs when we accepted call ups to the national team. It was really complicated. ”
The Ivory Coast football legend has announced that he will be seeking the presidency of the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF).
The incumbent Augustin Sidy Diallo will not seek re-election for the third time leaving the Ex-Elephant captain with a fat chance of taking the reins at the country’s federation. Diallo has served as FIF president for two consecutive terms and has been in office since 2011.
