One evening last January, Clemson’s star football players clung to a two-point lead in a high-stakes game. Five seconds remained and the ball fell into the hands of walk-on safety Elijah Pickens. Without hesitation, he lobbed it to a teammate standing wide open: long snapper Patrick Phibbs.

“Everything went in slow motion,” recalled walk-on safety Peter Cote. “The buzzer went off and the shot went in and every single person just went crazy.”
