ROCKLIN — The Butte College football team got off to a quick start and carried that momentum throughout the course of the game.
The Roadrunners downed Sierra College 42-21 Saturday afternoon at Buzz Ostrom Field in Rocklin. Butte rebounded from last week’s loss at American River College.
It took a mere 48 seconds into the game for the visitors to take the lead.
Nate Eschleman picked up an interception on Sierra’s opening drive that led to a 39-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Lindquist to Riley Potthast for the Roadrunners to lead 7-0 with 14:12 left in the first quarter.
Lindquist had another standout day as the sophomore completed 17-of-29 passes for 314 yards passing and five touchdowns.
After a Sierra punt later in the first quarter, Butte would string together another scoring drive.
Lindquist connected with Gridley High alumnus Jace Villapania for a 37-yard touchdown for a 14-0 lead at the 4:20 mark.
The Roadrunners continued to roll taking a 21-0 lead in the second quarter after Deonta McMahon’s 6-yard touchdown carry. McMahon led Butte on the ground with 61 yards on 15 carries and one touchdown. Avery McCuaig finished with 10 carries for 60 yards.
After allowing Sierra to score to make it 21-7, Butte added on. On third and long, Lindquist connected with Caleb Cooley for a 36-yard gain and a first down. Lindquist capped the drive with a 9-yard pass to Salomon Navarro for a 28-7 advantage.
Lindquist netted another touchdown pass when he found Marshal Brose for a 21-yard score and a 35-14 lead at the start of the third quarter.
Lindquist would connect with Brose again for a 50-yard gain to help set up a 9-yard touchdown catch for Tariq Glenn with 3:22 left in the third.
Brose led Butte in receiving with three catches for 75 yards and a touchdown. Villapania had three catches for 52 yards and a touchdown while Cooley finished with two catches for 43 yards.
Butte (6-3, 4-1 NorCal Conference) will wrap up the regular season Nov. 16 against Shasta at home. The game is scheduled to be played at Cowan Stadium and serves as the Roadrunners homecoming game where 19 members inducted into the Butte Athletic Hall of Fame will be honored at halftime.
