BEST BETS

There are actually two I love this week, the Saints and the Rams. I can’t believe the Saints are actually getting a point in Jacksonville — no matter what extenuating circumstances or bad evaluations bettors are making — but the Saints are on the road, so my best bet this week will be the Rams. I get the NIners are 4-0 and they are clearly better than I expected them to be at this point, but they still don’t have that quality win on their schedule and I just don’t see it happening here. The defending NFC champs have struggled the past two weeks, but there is no way their ‘D’ is as completely damaged as it’s appeared, it could be years before “Greg the Leg” misses another game-winner like he did a week ago Thursday in Seattle and these guys have to be desperate, even though it’s early. The Rams are still the most talented team in the NFC West, but they’re in third place, trailing both the Seahawks and Niners, and already have a loss to Seattle — which is likely to be serious competition for 17 weeks. The Rams have had 10 days to prepare for this is must-win at home. McVay and Phillips find a way to get it done and perhaps make a statement at the same time.

AA: DAL (-7)
The Cowboys suddenly are in search of a get-well game, and though Sam Darnold is well enough to start again following his three-game absence with mono, he’s likely to be rusty. The Cowboys were super sloppy in their loss vs. Green Bay, but the offense remained formidable, even without LT Tyron Smith all afternoon and RT La’el Collins down the stretch against a far more dangerous pass-rush ‘D’ than the Jets’. Though Dak Prescott could be protected by a pair of backup bookends, the Jets are also down Kelechi Osemele, in addition to two critical front-seven pieces — including C.J. Mosley and Henry Anderson — to counter the ground-and-pound Cowboys.
