Only two of Teddy Bridgewater’s 17 completions in his first pinch-hitting duty for Drew Brees Sunday in L.A. went to Saints running backs — a 16-yard dump-off for Latavius Murray and a 15-yarder for Alvin Kamara. There were two more failed connections with Kamara, bringing Teddy’s total targets for his backs up to four.Of Bridgewater’s 23 attempts last season, three were intended for backs, neither of them Kamara.
Does Bridgewater have an aversion to targeting Kamara? Of course not. Is this sample size big enough for us to make any firm proclamations? Heck no. Do we suspect that Kamara’s value will go down now that he’ll be on the receiving end of Bridgewater, not Brees? We sure do. And this isn’t some hot take, of course, with Brees the NFL’s all-time passing champion and Bridgewater a former first-round reclamation project who has yet to rediscover the form he showed more than three and a half years ago in Minnesota, prior to the career-altering knee injury.
Frankly, we’re pulling for Bridgewater — not because we’re Kamara or Michael Thomas owners — who has the opportunity of a lifetime to reclaim the career that was stolen from him by the football Gods.
We’re also skeptical.

There’s only one Brees, who has been building his rapport with Kamara and Michael Thomas for more than two and three years, respectively, now. Bridgewater doesn’t get those practice reps, and though New Orleans’ top two playmakers might have matchup-proof breathtaking skill sets, their chemistry wtih Brees plays as big a role in their success.
Add in the slate ahead for the now-Brees-less Saints — at Seattle Sunday, vs. Cowboys, vs. Bucs, at Jacksonville and at Chicago — and it might be time for not only Saints fans but fantasy owners who spent their first picks on Kamara and Thomas to start recalibrating expectations.
