MUNCIE, Ind. — Three East Central Indiana schools picked up wins in the opening week of the 2019 high school football season.

Delta, Monroe Central and Yorktown each moved to 1-0 — two by way of shutout — while other schools will look to regroup next week.

Yorktown 18, Anderson 0

Yorktown opened up its 2019 campaign with a shutout victory over Anderson. The Tigers entered the fourth quarter with a 6-0 lead, thanks to a first half touchdown by JJ Evans, and tacked on a pair of late passing touchdowns from Reid Neal to MiLon McCowan and Austin Hill.

Alexandria 18, Wes-Del 16

Two points was all that separated Wes-Del and Alexandria in a tightly contested matchup. The Warriors opened the fourth quarter up, 16-12, but the Tigers scored on a rushing touchdown with 9:34 left in the fourth and went on to win 18-16. Eric Harlan scored both of Wes-Del’s touchdowns off a pair of one-yard runs. Caeden McClaughry and Will Kelly each scored on a two-point conversion.

Franklin County 36, New Castle 20

Up 20-14 at halftime, New Castle gave up 22 unanswered points to Franklin County, who went on to win by 16. For the Trojans, William Grieser finished completing 24 of 53 passes, 294 yards and a trio of touchdowns (two passing, one rushing).

Brandon Matney (10 catches, 137 yards, one TD), Cooper Rusch (four catches, 41 yards, one TD) and Tytus Ragle (four catches, 53 yards) helped New Castle offensively. 

Defensively, Matt Bell (16 tackles, two forced fumbles), Dylan Beck (15 tackles) and Lane Nicholson (14 tackles) led the charge for the Trojans.

Delta 42, Central 0

Delta scored a touchdown off a 67-yard play-action pass from Brady Hunt to Wesley Stitt during the first play of the game and never looked back. The Eagles took a 21-0 first quarter lead into halftime off three Stitt scores (one receiving, two rushing) and scored three second-half rushing touchdowns, two from Malachi Silmon (11 yards, one yard) and one JaVaughn Whitfield. 

Monroe Central 37, Blackford 28

Playing without four of seniors, Monroe Central held on for a home victory to start the season. Blackford struck first with a rushing touchdown from Dalton Willmann — who finished with two touchdowns on the day — but Monroe Central answered back with a run from Malcolm Armour to go up 8-6 in the first.

Logan Patterson had a receiving touchdown and interception for the Golden Bears, while Joel Kennedy scored a pair and Luke Jones found the end zone, as well. Sophomore quarterback Jackson Ullom had a pair of passing touchdowns.

Other Blackford scores came from L’trel Schlotter (31 yards) and Isaac Justice (three yards).

South Adams 40, Winchester 0

Winchester was shut out at home against South Adams, 40-0.

Norwell 47, Jay County 0

Norwell scored four second quarter touchdowns en route to its 47-0 road victory against Jay County.
