KOLKATA: Mohun Bagan have roped in their third foreigner for the 2019-20 season and, like the previous two signings, the new player is also from Spain.
Central defensive midfielder Francisco Javier Gonzalez Munoz has joined the green and maroons, the club announced on Saturday. The 30-year old who hails from Cordoba, has spent a part of his youth career at Real Madrid and has last played for Hong Kong side Lee Man FC.
Mohun Bagan had earlier roped in Spanish forward Salva Chamorro and defender Fran Morante.
Gonzalez had played for the first team of Spanish side Real Zaragoza in a King’s Cup match against Sevilla in 2013 while he was unused substitute for Zaragoza in a La Liga match against Real Valladolid in the same year.
Apart from that, he has plied his trade for other Spanish clubs like Almeria B, Deportivo B, Zaragoza B, Cordoba B and Hercules in various Spanish league system levels like Tercera, Segunda Division B and Segunda.
He has also played for Ermis Aradippou in Cyprus, Pattaya United in Thailand and Bytovia Bytow in Poland.
“After many years in club football, I am excited to play in India and will do so with the same determination that I have always had. I have heard that there are a couple of other Spanish players and I hope to leave my mark too. Mohun Bagan is a great and very prestigious club with a great history. From what I have seen, they are biggest in India and I am excited for the new challenge,” Gonzalez was quoted as saying by the club’s website.
Meanwhile, it was officially confirmed by Mohun Bagan that they will have a pre-season residential camp in Goa from next week.
