State baseball tournament starts with quarterfinals Wednesday

Eight remaining.

After district tournaments, region tournaments and semi-state games, the final eight teams in the state will make their way to Lexington for the 2019 Whitaker Bank/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament, which is set to begin on Wednesday at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

The quarterfinals start with two games on Wednesday and continue on Thursday for the next two quarterfinal games. Semifinals are scheduled for Friday at 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., with the championship game scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m.

Here’s a look at each team in the tournament:

TATES CREEK COMMODORES (32-7)

Quarterfinal Opponent: Pleasure Ridge Park, Wednesday, 8:30 p.m.

Postseason Path: The Commodores beat Lexington Catholic in the 43rd District semifinals, before taking the title with a 7-5 win over Lafayette. They beat Western Hills and Madison Central in the 11th Region quarterfinals and semifinals to earn a spot in the 11th Region finals, where they beat Lafayette again, this time 7-1. Tates Creek topped Somerset, 6-2, in semi-state game 6 on Saturday.

Postseason Path: The Panthers beat Fairdale to advance to the 21st District championship, where they topped Holy Cross, 4-3. PRP run-ruled Bullitt Central in the 6th Region quarterfinals, but required extra innings in the next two games against Fern Creek and Bullitt East. The Panthers topped Taylor County in eight innings, 9-8, in semi-state game 3 on Saturday.

Postseason Path: The Tigers tore apart Holmes in five innings in the 35th District semifinals, before topping Covington Catholic in the final, 6-5. Beechwood rolled through the 9th Region tournament with 10-0 victories over Newport Central Catholic and Ryle, before beating Highlands in the final, 12-9. They took eight innings to beat Montgomery County, 4-3, in semi-state game 5 on Saturday.

In semi-state game 2 on Saturday, Breckinridge County beat South Warren, 7-3.

Quarterfinal Opponent: McCracken County, Thursday, 5:30 p.m.

Postseason Path: The Vikings are on a 31-game winning streak, with the last win coming against Lawrence County on Saturday in semi-state game 8, 5-0. Rowan County has shut out five of the six teams they’ve faced this postseason on the way to 61st District and 16th Region titles.

Postseason Path: The Mustangs don’t miss the state baseball tournament, and are making the sixth appearance in the sixth year the program has been in existence. After a 2-0 victory over Paducah Tilghman in the 2nd District championship, McCracken County picked up run-rule wins over Calloway County and Hickman County before beating the Blue Tornado again in the 1st Region championship, this time 3-1. The Mustangs beat Hopkinsville in semi-state game 1 on Saturday in six innings, 14-1.

Postseason Path: The Bulldogs put runs on the board through the 54th District and 14th Region tournaments, outscoring opponents, 62-13. After a 14-2 victory over Breathitt County in the 14th Region championship, Hazard topped Corbin in semi-state game 7, 2-1, to earn a spot in the quarterfinals at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

TRINITY SHAMROCKS (34-5)

Quarterfinal Opponent: Hazard, Thursday, 8:30 p.m.

Postseason Path: The Shamrocks cruised through the 27th District tournament in a total of nine innings by outscoring Waggener and Atherton a combined 27-1. They followed it with an 18-1 win over Central, before 8-3 and 8-4 wins over Male and St. Xavier to claim the 7th Region title. In semi-state game 4, Trinity topped North Oldham, 8-3.
